Two high-tech firms are breaking ground in the Telecom Corridor on a 1 million-square-foot data center.

RagingWire Data Centers and NTT Communications have purchased 42 acres near Bush Turnpike to build what will be one of the largest data centers in North Texas. It’s planned to be about the same size as the huge Facebook project under construction north of Fort Worth.

“This project will have a big impact in North Texas,” said Bo Bond with commercial real estate firm JLL, which arranged the land purchase. “You have tons of companies in the Telecom Corridor, and this will be close to them.

“These data centers power the banks and insurance companies and make your phone work — everything you do today,” Bond said.

He said the location — with access to telecommunication fiber networks and electric power — will serve businesses in Richardson, Plano and across the Dallas area.

“They are going to build a very large campus like they have done in Northern California and Northern Virginia,” he said.

RagingWire is part of a worldwide network of 140 data centers operated by NTT Communications.

“We are thrilled to be entering the Dallas data center market, one of the top markets in the United States,” George Macricostas, RagingWire CEO, said in a prepared statement. “Together we will expand and enhance the data center sector in the region.”

The property is just east of Richardson in Garland’s city limits. The city of Garland and Garland Power & Light worked with RagingWire and NTT to land the big development.

“We view RagingWire as a leader in the data center industry and a strategic addition to the business community,” Garland Mayor Douglas Athas said.

North Texas is one of the fastest-growing data center markets in the country. With hundreds of new businesses moving to the area and the greatest population growth in the nation, Texas is attracting billions of dollars of investment in data centers.

Dallas-Fort Worth is already the fourth-largest data center market in the country, according to a study by 451 Research. And the market here is growing by about 13 percent a year.
